The mehndi night is the most colourful, least formal event of the wedding week, and often the most fun to photograph: bright outfits, intricate henna, music, dance, and family letting their guard down before the more formal ceremonies ahead. The Wedding Film has photographed mehndi nights across Mumbai as part of Muslim, Bohra and multi-community wedding weeks for decades.
We approach mehndi coverage differently from a formal ceremony: less about posed portraits, more about staying close to the action, catching the detail of the henna artist's work, the choreography rehearsed for weeks finally performed, and the specific energy of a mehndi night that's hard to recreate in a studio.
What Makes Mehndi Coverage Different
Mehndi nights usually happen in the evening, often outdoors or in a decorated tent or hall with coloured lighting, string lights or a stage set, all of which change how we shoot: we bring the right lenses and lighting approach for low, warm, colourful light rather than the flat daylight of an afternoon ceremony. Getting the henna itself in sharp, close detail, on the bride's hands and feet, is a specific request we plan for.
We also photograph the performances: sangeet-style dance numbers are increasingly part of Muslim wedding mehndi nights too, and we cover both the choreographed group performances and the spontaneous dancing that usually follows once the formal programme winds down.
